Feel the tradition
…best of all, during holidays on the farm
The world in which we live changes unbelievably quickly. New inventions, developments, and impressions rain down upon us and try to carry us away again and again. Sentences such as “Have you tried…yet?”, “you must experience it for yourself as soon as possible…”, or “what, you still haven’t heard of this…” make us feel we have to do more and more things in an ever shorter period of time.
Thankfully, in this massive flood we can still find islands and anchor points to save ourselves. One of which for me is tradition, the handing down of values, customs, and practices. You can experience a lot of tradition during a farm holiday in Kleinarl, because tradition plays a very, very important role on the farm. Much of the knowledge that is necessary to manage the fields and forests and to work with animals on the farm, you don’t learn in school, but rather it is passed down from generation to generation. Knowledge which has accumulated over the centuries, put to the test by generations of farmers. As guests at our farm, you can experience this tradition up-close including bread baking, curing bacon, producing various milk products including all kinds of cheeses, yogurt and butter, and preparing juices, jams, schnapps, and liqueurs.
There is also much knowledge that has been handed down about different herbs in the garden as well as the preparation of home remedies with the likes of St. John’s wort or arnica.
The traditional architecture of the old houses, stables, and granaries is also very interesting and far shrewder than you might realize at first glance. The various customs that accompany us throughout the year and which can be personally experienced by our guests are also laden with handed-down knowledge and traditions, both here on the farm as well as in the town itself.
Lastly, there is one especially nice Kleinarl tradition that I like, one which our many regular guests actively participate in: people who have ever once taken a vacation here in Kleinarl, return time and again to our beautiful town in the middle of the mountains of SalzburgerLand.
