Special info about the Zirbenholz vacation house:
The positive qualities of pine, “Queen of the Alps” (pine or Swiss stone pine; Latin: pinus cembra) have been valued and used for centuries. For the first time, this empirical knowledge underwent scientific analysis. In a study on behalf of an inter-regional research program, scientists at JOANNEUM RESEARCH evaluated the effects of pine on the exercise and recuperation capability in 30-year-old healthy adults. The study confirmed a significant influence of the material on physical and mental condition. Concerning sleep, there appeared to be considerably better sleep quality in a bed made of pine. A better night’s rest was accompanied by a reduced heart rate and increased metabolism throughout the day. The average “savings” in a pine bed computed to 3,500 heart beats per day, which corresponds to about an hour of cardiac work. The subjective assessment of participants agreed with these physiological results, with reports of a more restful sleep, better general health, and surprisingly higher “social extraversion” in a pine wood room. Possibly one reason why guest rooms had traditionally been wainscoted with pine.
